What is "Revenue?"

Revenue size is an indicator of the size and scope of a charity. It is an official number, found in the charity's most recent annual report to the IRS, "Form 990." It reflects the year’s charitable contributions and grants, income from programs, yield on investments (e.g., endowment), and income from any other source. It is NOT the size of a charity's annual budget or expenses. To see the complete 990 click on "GuideStar.com."

What is the "Year of IRS Authorization?"

Year of IRS Authorization is the year the IRS authorized the charity legally to raise tax-exempt and tax-deductible contributions from the general public. To quality for these privileges, charities must certify that they legitimately serve a public interest as defined by statutes. Most new charities apply for this designation as soon as they are officially (legally) incorporated in their states, so in recent years the "Year of IRS Authorization" is closely related to their age. In Massachusetts and other older states, some charities pre-date the IRS and tax-free privileges, so the IRS year is more an indication of institutional maturity than of age itself.
